We spent October 9-11 in Montreal and embarked on October 12.

Oct. 10 Centennial Park, Montreal, Quebec

Two days before the cruise, we went for a sunset walk around the lake in this beautiful park at the peak of the fall foliage season.

Oct. 13, Quebec City, Quebec

Oct. 14, Cornerbrook, Newfoundland

Cornerbrook is the largest city in western Newfoundland, about 25,000 people.

We got a taxi driver, Martin, to give us a tour of the city. First stop was at a high point overlooking the city at Captain Cook's Monument-- A memorial monument for Captain James Cook. The lookout has a wonderful view of the city and the Atlantic ocean.

Oct. 15 On Board at Sea

We had dinner with authors Ron Butcher, 90, and Veronica Bennett-Butcher, 85.
Ron's book "Been There, Done That: Through Treacherous Skies" tells among other topics about his air force work aboard WII bomber command raids over Germany.
Veronica's book "From Veronica With Love: From Waif to WAAF to Wife - A Story of Survival" tells about her difficult schooling in a convent in London and later about her role in the Air Force as a flight Mechanic on aircraft engines and as a drill instructor. They met on the internet ten years ago. (You can find their books on Amazon.)

Oct. 16, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown (population 32,000) is the largest city on and the capital of Prince Edward Island, one of Canada's ten provinces. Charming town with many Victorian-era houses and buildings.

Oct. 17, Sydney, Nova Scotia

Sydney is on Cape Breton Island in the Province of Novia Scotia. We took a taxi to the town of Baddeck, where the AG Bell museum is located. During the drive there, the taxi driver, Martin, told us all about Sydney and about his own life and family.

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) was the inventor of the telephone and was also known for his education of the deaf. Bell first visited Cape Breton in 1885 and set up a vacation home the following year. He spent a good part of each year there with his wife Mabel Hubbard Bell away from the formality and summer heat of Washington DC.

We visited the AG Bell museum and historic site.

We discovered that he was not only known for the telephone and as a teacher of the deaf, but he was a prolific inventor in aeronautics, marine engineering, medicine, etc. we saw his hydrofoil craft at the musuefulm.

Oct. 18, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Downtown Halifax

Located in Halifax's South End in the Halifax Ocean Terminals, Pier 21 was used as a passenger terminal for trans-Atlantic ocean liners from 1928 until 1971.

We visited the research office at Pier 21 to see the ship arrival records in 1935. Below is a sample. Allen's grandmother, mother, and aunts are listed here. The ship they arrived on was the Pulaski, There was accommodation for 30-1st, 260-2nd and 1,086-3rd & 4th class passengers. it came from Gydnia, Poland to Halifax.
