Oct. 23 Newport, Rhode Island

Charming town,  Newport is a city on Aquidneck Island  about 30 miles south of Providence. Known as a New England summer resort and for the famous Newport Mansions, it is the home of various U.S. Navy facilities. A major 18th century port city, Newport now contains among the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the United States. We visited the old Vanderbilt mansion, actually a giant summer "cottage" for the Vanderbilts and their servants. Back yard photos shown.
Note also the crazy house summer cottage built by a couple who couldn't agree on the architecture, so they each took control of the design of separate parts of it.
